How to Master the Art of Eating with Dentures

Enjoying a good meal is one of those simple pleasures in life. If you’re new to dentures, however, this activity might not be so easy. Although they mimic natural teeth pretty well, they still feel different than what you’re used to. Maybe they’ve even slipped a time or two!

It wouldn’t take long for this to become frustrating. Fortunately, there are some training tips that can help you master the art of eating with dentures. You’ll still need some patience, but you might be surprised with the results!

Tip #1: Embody Your Inner-Child – Eat Soft, Squishy Foods

In order to move on to steak and tougher food groups, you’ll have to start slow and work your way up the ladder. Indulging in chewy, crunchy, hard foods before you’re ready is a good way to raise your blood pressure or end up with sore gums. It might sound boring, but keep in mind that soft cuisine can include:

  • Mashed potatoes and gravy
  • Applesauce (with cinnamon if you like)
  • Chocolate (or any other flavor under the sun) pudding
  • Broiled fish
  • Meatloaf
  • Pasta
  • Pancakes
  • Simple ice cream flavors, milkshakes, and malts

Just remember that consuming ice cream every day is bad for adults, too!

Tip #2: Size Does Matter – Cut Your Food into Tiny Pieces

It might go without saying that smaller pieces of food are easier to eat. This is especially true if you’re still in denture-training. Using your front teeth to tear apart a larger snack, for example, could quickly dislodge your dentures. Bite-sized chunks are also easier to manipulate in your mouth, putting you in a good position for tip number three.

Tip #3: Balance is Key – Chew on Your Right and Left

With natural teeth or dental implants, our instinct is to chew primarily with one side of our mouths. However, this could put too much pressure on one half of your dentures, which could result in aches or slippage. Instead, be mindful while you eat. Chewing slowly and spreading your food evenly in your mouth so you’re using both sides will avoid excess pressure and help you keep a grip on your dentures (and your food).

Tip #4: There’s No Such Thing as A Stupid Question – Ask Your Dentist!

Know that you’re not the only one who’s had to adjust to new dentures. There’s no shame in asking for some extra advice! Your dentist has seen many patients make the transition and can give you personalized recommendations that work for you and your habits. Don’t hesitate to use them as a resource!
